SUMMARY A man aged 32 years was found to have lactase deficiency in histologically normal jejunal and ileal mucosa, together with regional enteritis affecting the terminal ileum. The diseased ileum exhibited deficiencies of lactase, sucrase and maltase, and there was mucosal destruction. The remainder of the small intestine exhibited isolated lactase deficiency, a diffuse small intestinal defect the relationship of which to regional enteritis is uncertain.
