Summary A functional renal artery stenosis was present in 15 of 166 hypertensive patients examined. The relative values of clinical criteria, an assessment of renal length, the results of intravenous pyelography, the response to angiotensin infusion and the results of 203 Hg‐labelled “Neohydrin” renal scan and and accumulation tests in identifying these patients were compared. No test was found to be an ideal screening procedure, but the most satisfactory was the rapid sequence and water load intravenous pyelogram. Retrograde arteriography should not be performed on all hypertensive patients.
