SUMMARY The cytotoxic agents 6‐mercaptopurine and azothioprine (“Imuran”) were used in the treatment of six young women with progressive hepatitis. Effective suppression of clinical and biochemical evidence of activity of the disease was not associated with histopathological improvement. These drugs may be particularly suited to the treatment of progressive hepatitis when corticosteroid therapy has failed to exert control or has caused prohibitive complications.
