SUMMARY It is difficult to compose a precise summary of the present state of knowledge about the role of antigen in inducing antibody formation. If one remembers that no theory has been proved or disproved, a reasonable statement would be as follows. The immune response to even a simple antigen depends upon a complex interplay of different cell types. Competent cells possess the necessary genetic information to manufacture specific antibody and they are stimulated to do this by antigen which has been modified by contact with a macrophage.
