SUMMARY Normal 51 Cr‐labelled platelets were incubated in plasma from patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, and the survival of these platelets in the normal subject was determined. In two of eight patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, a factor which reduced platelet survival was clearly demonstrated. As all eight patients had shortened platelet survival, the possibility that there may be two groups of patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura was discussed.
