Summary The absorption of iron with and without a preceding dose of pancreatic extract has been studied in patients with hæmochromatosis and cirrhosis of the liver. The addition of pancreatic extract caused a significant reduction in iron absorption in both groups of patients. It is proposed that a specific derangement of pancreatic function leads to the excess absorption of iron which occurs in these conditions.
