Summary Undergraduate courses in pathology rely too much on morbid anatomy and histology, and need to be balanced with experimental work. A teaching method is described whereby a chosen group of medical students gains direct experience of experimental pathology in extracurricular time, and then reports its findings back to the main class. Suitable experiments are listed, and literature is cited in which details of others may be found. The value of this approach to teaching is discussed.
