In modern theology the living connectedness between exalted S on and S pirit of P entecost in history has been broken, leading to their linearity and to a structure whereby the S pirit seems to ‘take the place’ of the S on. Modern forms of ‘substitutionism’ distort the theological perspective. The ‘non‐reductive physicalism’ of contemporary science can return us to an understanding of T rinity in history, based not on the modern binary of transcendence and immanence but the integrated, transformational hermeneutic of scriptural tradition. This is the critical reorientation of theology to the living C hrist, in the H oly S pirit, which corrects the substitutionary structure to a mediatory one.
