A lfred L oisy's ‘ F irmin’ articles applied J ohn H enry N ewman's concept of development of doctrine within church history to the B ible. In doing this, L oisy was attempting to convince his C atholic audience to appropriate the historical critical method within C atholic biblical interpretation. L oisy attempted to explain the notion of development within the B ible, which had become commonplace among the P rotestant historical critical scholarship of the time, in light of N ewman's concept of the development of doctrine within history.
