For many of the developing world's poorest farmers and food‐insecure people, roots, tubers, banana and plantain crops (RTBs) serve as a critical source of food, nutrition and cash income. Although sometimes seen as locked in traditional, unchanging agri‐food systems, trends in production for RTBs have been both dynamic and diverse over the last six decades as this figure illustrates. This paper analyses the driving factors behind the evolution in production, utilisation and trade of RTBs in developing countries since the early 1960s and recent estimates of their future trajectory.
