Summary The author briefly traces the history of keratoacanthoma since its description by Hutchinson in 1899, and discusses its incidence according to age and affected body areas as well as its possible aetiology. The role of sunlight in the causation of keratoacanthoma is examined. The clinical features of this condition, including its possible role as a precursor of malignant processes, and its diagnosis are discussed. The author also suggests a therapeutic approach.
