Summary The authors report the results of screening for dermatophytes soil samples from diverse localities of West Bengal (India). Seventy per cent of these soil samples proved positive; samples obtained from all the diverse localities, except from a pond bank, gave positive results. Nineteen strains of dermatophytes, comprising 11 strains of M. gypseum and eight of T. mentagrophytes , were isolated. Both dermatophytes were present in five samples.
