Religious persecution is synonymous with the popular image of the Middle Ages. “Outsiders in Medieval Europe” is a pedagogy‐focused article on a medieval history course for undergraduates that studies persecution. The course, which explores marginalized peoples and groups in the Middle Ages, focuses on medieval interfaith relations and the history of sexuality. Students will study medieval anti‐Semitism and medieval Jews, explore Christian interactions with Islam before and after the crusades, and examine John Boswell's argument about Christian attitudes towards homosexuality. Students will conclude the course by studying female mysticism and attitudes towards illness. The article includes a sample syllabus.
