This article examines the Ottoman economy from the rise of the state in around 1300 to the major debasement of c.1585. After a brief assessment of the problems of sources and an overview of the economy, it investigates the nature of the Ottoman economy, considering the model proposed by Mehmet Genç based on provisionalism, traditionalism and fiscalism, and arguing that what characterised the early Ottoman economy was decentralisation, regional diversity and the pragmatic application of control.
