The R obbins report and its five appendices jump‐started research into higher education in the U nited K ingdom. Previously the preserve of a few sociologists it rapidly became a recognised field of academic study that has had considerable influence on policy and practice. However, the question of whether it is a single academic field or a subject of research for specialists from other social science disciplines remains open.
