Introducing a scientific discipline, like geology, to a novice is a formidable undertaking. It involves being informative and interesting, drawing the reader or listener in, developing and facilitating their interest. The Amateur Geologist was a happy find in my pre‐university days. Although it is now over 50 yr old, it still bursts with relevant information for the learner.
