Let me start off, then, with a sort of epigraph by Carleton Coon. Coon is not remembered fondly today, because in the early 1960s, as President of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, he was secretly colluding with the segregationists, giving them preprints of his book which purported to demonstrate that the reason that Africans were economically and politically subjugated by Europeans is that they hadn’t been members of our species for very long, because whites had evolved into Homo sapiens 200,000 years before blacks did.
