Although geographers have profound interests in European Union (EU) agricultural policy, significant gaps remain in the literature on identifying innovative diversification and farmers' capacity for it. This literature review paper engages the contemporary debates in the geographical and social science literatures on this issue comparatively based on on‐farm empirical field research findings. Remaining cognisant of farmers' diversity, it implies that while not every farmer is or can be ‘innovative’, affective assumptions about farmers' limitations as innovators and diversifiers and the relationship between both need to be dispelled and meaningful policy issues treated more effectively.
