This review discusses the roles of glycogen from a new perspective beyond storing and supplying energy. We discuss the role of UDPG as a signal molecule beyond transferring glucose to glycogen. Furthermore, we emphasize the critical role of the gluconeogenesis‐glycogenesis‐glycogenolysis‐PPP metabolic chain in redox homeostasis and discuss how the metabolic chain affects CD8 + T‐cell memory formation, macrophage polarization, and tumor‐repopulating cell growth.
