Sperms, epithelial ciliated cells (oviduct, trachea, etc.), and some sensory receptor cells possess protruding organelles performing highly specific energy‐demanding functions like mobility, displacing mucus containing particles and pathogens, or sensory transduction. ATP diffusing from the cytoplasm is insufficient for fueling these slender structures lacking mitochondria; they are equipped with a diversity of very efficient mechanisms by which they generate ATP locally. We analyze and discuss such mechanisms in representative examples.
