RNA virus progenies undergo secretion and spread via multiple pathways. We highlight recent evidence on the autophagosome‐derived unconventional route. The inner membrane of these organelles can either disintegrate to release free virions or stay intact to release populations of virions in membrane‐bound forms, which are then internalized into neighboring cells by distinct entry mechanisms.
