Linear ubiquitin chains and the LUBAC ubiquitin ligase discovered by the author play crucial roles in immune signaling. LUBAC, which is composed of HOIL‐1L, SHARPIN, and HOIP, specifically generates linear ubiquitin chains by conjugating donor ubiquitin onto the N‐terminal Met of acceptor ubiquitin. Linear ubiquitination plays crucial roles in NF‐κB activation and cell death regulation although ubiquitin is known to be involved in proteolysis.
