Mitochondrial membrane remodeling has been linked with several cellular processes including mitochondrial damage or apoptotic cell death and proceeds via yet poorly understood mechanisms. In this issue of The FEBS Journal , Hwang et al . used different forms of super resolution microscopy to study the formation of macromolecular complexes of mitochondrial antiviral signal protein ( MAVS ). They found that ds RNA stimulation correlates with MAVS ‐dependent changes in the morphology of mitochondria that require MAVS transmembrane domain.
