Do you ever wake up thinking that you might like to do something different today? Preretirement contemplation began for me at least a year before I actually retired. During this time, individuals consider balance of work and family, timing, retirement planning, retirement expectations, health, and financial security. Those factors along with the exit from employment—gradual or abrupt—often influence adjustment to and satisfaction with retirement. Engaging activity, identity bridging, and family support can lead to a meaningful retirement experience allowing for increased involvement, new endeavors, and opportunity to contribute and to make room for others to begin successful careers.
