From its beginning, the field of family and consumer sciences has sought to be a major force for social reform. This article suggests that the field's rich legacy can be extended by devoting new energy to scholarship aimed at understanding the role of community in individual and family well‐being and in examining the efficacy of research‐based, community‐level strategies aimed at enhancing well‐being. Frameworks for conceptualizing future scholarship are presented, including specific theoretical and methodological perspectives that may help operationalize research in relation to ecological systems theory which has been highlighted as a key concept for the field.
