Ecumenism and the Will‐for‐Friendship: A Contribution from Latin America

Through Latin American theologies and liberation theologies, ecumenism can be understood as a space of interrelations where the will‐for‐friendship takes place. These theologies share an epistemology in which diversity is essential to life on earth, as each subject needs the other. Liberation theologies also locate theology in the context of and from the invisible, and share an epistemology that encompasses the total experience of being human. In this epistemology, the theological starting points of mestizaje /hybridity, migration/fluidity, and diversity/pluralism lead to practical love. A theology that is committed to justice creates the possibility of healing the oikos . The will‐for‐friendship is the beginning of the desire of being friends, which is a condition for achieving the eschatological “us” that allows the diverse and plural life on earth to be one.
