With its wide geographical and chronological horizons, the so‐called F redegar C hronicle from the seventh century covers the R oman past and revives elements of the cultural heritage of R ome. This paper addresses the issue of ‘ R omanness after R ome’ by analysing two elements of R oman culture important in the text: the architectural remnants of the empire and the tales that relate to a classical R oman tradition. It looks at the prerequisites and the contexts according to which F redegar adapted R omanness in his chronicle.
