Significance of decoy cells for indicating viral cytopathic effect in urine cytology

As shown here, decoy cells in urine are not specific for BK polyoma virus and can be found in other urinary viral infections. Immunostaining, electron microscopy and molecular studies are advised when decoy cells are seen, to clarify the infective agent.
