Summary Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud., though native to C hina first came to the attention of W estern explorers and naturalists in J apan. It is of cultural importance both in mainland A sia and also in J apan. We describe the early W estern encounters with Paulownia tomentosa highlighting in particular a lineage of early illustrations made in Japan and Europe between the mid‐1820s and 1878 that reflect the fusion of Japanese art and W estern science.
