Summary Cyclocarya paliurus (Batalin) I ljinskaya, an endemic tree of C hina and the sole living species of a very distinctive genus of Juglandaceae, is described, and an overview of its phylogenetic relationships and fossil record is provided. Fossil occurrences of Cyclocarya indicate that the genus was already differentiated around 55 million years ago and was once widespread in the Northern Hemisphere. The current restriction of Cyclocarya to C hina is the result of regional extinction in N orth A merica and E urope during the C enozoic.
