Allergic contact dermatitis caused by adapalene

A 22-year-old female presented with a 4-month history of facial erythema and papules with scaling. She had started using Differin gel® for the treatment of acne vulgaris before the appearance of the eruptions, which remitted after discontinuation of treatment, only to recur 2 months later when she resumed the use of Differin gel®. Avoidance of Differin gel® and the application of a mild corticosteroid led to the disappearance of the rash. We suspected contact dermatitis caused either by the patient’s cosmetics, or by Differin gel®.
