Astrocytes respond to injury and disease in the central nervous system, known as reactive astrogliosis. Liddelow et al. reported the three cytokines released by microglia are crucial to triggering the toxic astrocyte phenotype. These toxic astrocytes are also relevant to neurodegenerative and neuroimmune diseases.
