I started my career as a clinical neurologist at the Institute of Brain Diseases, Tohoku University School of Medicine in 1975. Since then, I have been closely associated with the Neuroimmunological Research Committee of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, and the Japanese Society for Neuroimmunology. In this commentary, I will summarize an untold story regarding multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica in Japan.
