Key Messages The market in unauthorized secondary suite rentals in Vancouver represents an instance of market informality practiced by middle‐class households in the global north. This informal market enacts a series of backward linkages with formal markets related to consumption goods, labour, land, and finance. Institutional mechanisms at the federal and local government levels shape these linkages in ways that tend to benefit homeowner‐landlords of secondary suites more than renters.
