This article assesses the relationship between B razil and C hile, focusing on the fields of economic and security cooperation from C hile's perspective. Chile plays a number of different roles, the most salient of which is ‘global trader’. This role stretches beyond B razil's expectations, but it converges with the social demands of M exico and the U nited S tates as well as with the cues of the global market. Such a salient role – alongside that of mediator, bridge builder, and partner of A rgentina in security cooperation issues – influences C hile's patterns of cooperation with and distance from B razil as the regional power in S outh A merica.
