This article situates the future trajectory of the C hina‐ E urope relationship within C hina's emerging “grand strategy” for its engagement with the world. I argue that the second decade of the 21st century has seen C hina choose to rise into, instead of drastically change, the world order. C hina's incremental intercontinentalism accepts U.S. 's dominance in the world system, but nonetheless actively seeks to build up new multilateral structures to engage with various regions and countries around the globe. In this process, the European Union and E urope are gradually figuring more prominently in C hina's economic and technological strategies. Great space still exists for strong C hina‐ E urope collaborations, but these will more likely take place in economic instead of political and strategic spheres. I conclude with several implications for global governance and C hina‐ E urope relations.
