A narrative of extremely pervasive rangeland degradation that underlies ongoing state policy on range management and pastoralism widely circulates in scientific reports, policy statements and news reports in China. Adopting a political ecology approach, this paper critically analyses official reports on rangeland degradation through a case study from the Tibet Autonomous Region. It reveals internally inconsistent or contradictory figures and statements regarding the magnitude and extent of rangeland degradation, and points out political‐economic factors influencing official reports on rangeland degradation.
