Assessment of immune responses in Indian major carp, Labeo rohita against multiple antigenic components of three bacterial fish pathogens; Aeromonas hydrophila , Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus

Immunization strategy involving the multiple antigens can be useful in eliciting immune responses against different pathogens. In this study, attempt has been made to assess the immune responses in Indian major carp, rohu ( Labeo rohita ), against multiple antigenic preparations involving particulate antigens of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus and the extracellular protein (ECP) antigen of Aeromonas hydrophila . L .  rohita fingerlings were intraperitoneally injected with individual antigens and mixed antigen‐followed by a booster dose, and then, various specific immune responses and non‐specific immune responses were evaluated after 14 th day of the booster dose. The findings showed antibody response of fish in the mixed antigen‐immunized group against individual antigen were at par with that of fish in the individual antigen‐immunized group. Similarly, several non‐specific immune responses were also significantly ( p  ≥ 0.05) elevated in the mixed antigen‐immunized group. On the contrary, A .  hydrophila ECP antigen failed to stimulate various non‐specific immune parameters. The findings of the study showed that multiple antigens evoked immune responses at par with their individual antigenic forms and hence effective multivalent vaccination strategy can be developed against these pathogens to prevent severe economic losses in aquaculture.
