Authors from the Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital review 221 children who were retrieved by the hospital's specialist transport team to the paediatric intensive care unit in this issue of Acta Paediatrica1. These transports were deemed non-elective and they are compared to a control group comprised of 3 444 children admitted to the same department over the same six year period, but by other pathways. The authors report non-elective transported patients were sicker, younger, stayed longer in the intensive care unit (ICU), and required more Paediatric ICU (PICU) specific therapies.
