Parastomal hernia is a frequent occurrence after stoma formation. Stapled Mesh stomA Reinforcement Technique (SMART) – a technique that places an onlay mesh in the trephine during permanent stoma formation has been shown to be safe without increased post‐operative morbidities such as mesh infection, and significantly reduces incidence of parastomal hernia.
