This paper examines the career of J ohann S ebastian B ach (1685–1750) and the role played by W ilhelm H is I (who was, with A lbert von H aller, a noted pioneer of physiology) in the exhumation of B ach's remains in 1894. His's examination of these remains allowed the sculptor C arl S effner to produce the celebrated statue of B ach which stands outside the church of S t T homas in L eipzig, where the composer was employed from 1723 until his death. Modern forensic techniques have recently enabled B ach's image to be reconstructed in even more spectacular detail.
