A field study was conducted to induce male sterility in okra using gametocides at consisted of twenty eight treatments comprising of three gametocides viz., GA 3 , ethrel and MH at different concentrations and sprayed at different stages. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The results obtained during course of investigation are summarized in this chapter. 1. Application of chemicals induced pollen sterility to varying degrees depending on the nature of the gametocides concentration, stage of spray and number of sprays. Application of MH at the rate of 200 ppm treated three times at 20, 30 and 40 days after sowing resulted in higher pollen sterility. Lowest pollen sterility was observed with GA 3 @ 200 ppm sprayed once during 20 days after sowing. 2. The plant height increased with GA 3 treated plants while the reduction of plant height was noticed in ethrel and MH application. Higher plant height was recorded in GA 3 at the rate of 400 ppm sprayed thrice (20+30+40 DAS). Lowest plant height was observed in MH at the rate of 200 ppm sprayed thrice (20+30+40 DAS). 3. Leaf area reduced significantly with all gametocides over control. Higher leaf area was observed in control during 60 and 90 days after sowing. Lower leaf area was recorded in ethrel at the rate of 1250 ppm sprayed thrice (20+30+40 DAS)., both in case of 60 and 90 days after sowing. 4. Number of branches per plant increased with application of gametocides viz., GA 3 , ethrel and MH over control. Higher number of branches per plant was recorded in MH @ 50 ppm sprayed once (20DAS). Number of branches per plant decreased with increase in concentrations and number of sprays. The lowest number of branches per plant was recorded in ethrel @ 1250 ppm sprayed thrice (20+30+40 DAS). 5. Number of days for flower initiation reduced with the application of GA 3 over control. Less number of days for initiation of flower was recorded in GA 3 at the rate of 400 ppm sprayed twice (20+30 DAS). Number of days for flower initiation was maximum in case of MH at the rate of 200 ppm sprayed thrice (20+30+40 DAS). 6. Number of days for 50 per cent flowering also decreased with the application of GA 3 over control. Lower number of days for 50 per cent flowering was recorded with GA …
