On the Cover: We typically think of rejection as something that happens to a graft, rather than something in which the graft participates in its own demise. This month, Egelkamp et al ( pages 2692) question this viewpoint in showing that proximal renal tubular epithelial cells respond to alloantibody‐specific crosslinking of HLA class I molecules or direct interactions with allogeneic T and NK cells by secreting cytokines and chemokines that contribute to antibody‐ and T cell–mediated rejection. This crosstalk between the graft and the recipient may play a role in the progression of kidney rejection. Nicole Valenzuela provides a thoughtful editorial on page 2671.
