The present study examined the practice of forgiveness among participants from C hina ( N = 172) and N ew Z ealand ( N = 91). We tested a theoretical model describing the relationships between collectivism, individualism, and forgiveness. Participants from C hina were more collectivistic and less individualistic than were participants from N ew Z ealand. Overall, participants from N ew Z ealand were more forgiving than were participants from C hina. Collectivism was positively related to decisional forgiveness in C hinese participants. Decisional forgiveness independently predicted conciliatory behaviour among participants from C hina, but this was not the case for participants from N ew Z ealand. Thus, the hypothesized model received qualified support.
