All patients who had sustained occult fractures reported a decrease in quality of life compared to only 42% of patients in the non-fracture group. Common complications reported by patients or their carers included persistent pain, decreased mobility, depression, anxiety, fatigue, social isolation, prolonged hospital stay, recurrent falls and cognitive decline. Sixty per cent of the occult fracture group experienced increased reliance on walking aids compared to only 18% of the non-fracture group.
