When D ouglas C opland of the U niversity of M elbourne was about to go abroad in 1933, a leading A ustralian businessman, H erbert G epp, hailed him as the ‘ K eynes of the Commonwealth’. G epp was referring to C opland's contributions to A ustralian economic policy, not that of the B ritish C ommonwealth, but there were similarities between C opland and J ohn M aynard K eynes. In full flight, C opland impressed his compatriots with his prodigious work ethic, networking skills, persuasive powers with policy‐makers, and practice of popularising economics in order to effect stabilisation policy.
