This article draws from several sets of archival and published life‐writings to uncover the domestic experiences of bachelors from middling to elite backgrounds who lived in temporary accommodation. It offers an alternative assessment of single men's domestic lives, one that challenges claims that bachelors made little material, psychological or emotional investment in their homes. By moving away from conclusions centred on the normative familial home this article offers a new interpretation of late Georgian domestic life and contributes to the widening literature on histories of the home, family and gender, material culture studies and the comfort infrastructure of the home.
