The issue of prayer is central to many volumes of devotional literature. Although the simple acts of praising, giving thanks and intercession seem uncontroversial, manuals of devotion have different concepts of the capacities, natures and workings of their readers’ minds and choose different methods of training habits of prayer. Such differences are highlighted when a devotional text crosses borders of denomination and language, as in the adaptations of Francis de Sales's Introduction à la vie dévote (1609) by Henry Dodwell (1673) and William Nicholls (1701), which seek to adapt a Catholic best‐seller to the needs of a Protestant readership.
