The libretti of S imon‐ J oseph P ellegrin's tragédies en musique are a perfect example of the use and functioning of musical clair‐obscur in F rench opera in the eighteenth century. They illustrate the way it shapes and structures them both from a micro and macro point of view, with a rich typology of arias as well as literary and musical patterns. The need for variety and contrast and the systematic alternation between different types of arias, lyrical forms, registers, scenes and genres help structure F rench opera of the Enlightenment.
