The most ambitious poem to celebrate the U nion of 1707 was J ohn P hilips's georgic C yder (1708). A climactic passage portrays Q ueen A nne as a semi‐divine author of the U nion. What does C yder tell us about the way A nne was understood in 1707? A nonjuror supported by R obert H arley's moderate T ories, P hilips uses the georgic to propose a model of political cooperation and experimental pragmatism. He also celebrates A nne as an antitype of earlier monarchs, specifically E dgar the P acific and H enry VII , while his invitation to read typologically acknowledges the problems posed to Jacobite sensibilities by the H anoverian succession.
